I HEART HIGH-WAISTED SKIRTS!

With Fall and Winter trends leaning toward 40s glamour and elegant styles from classic eras gone by, high-waisted skirts have steadily made their way to the most fashionable closets this year. High-waisted pants and jeans are also a top pick this season, and are best paired with a ruffled blouse or tucked in sweater for a silhouette-enhancing look. For work or dressier occasions, the high-waisted skirt offers plenty of comfort and encourages the hourglass figure for almost all body types. Need some help pulling off the look successfully this season? Here are some tips on wearing high-waisted skirts:

STYLE TIP #1 / Pair your high waisted skirt with a loose, sheer tee and an oversized buckle belt.

We love almost anything that the Olsen twins wear so it is no surprise to us that Ashley Olsen is first up in this month’s Style Tips. Ashley pairs a flared, high waisted skirt with a loose white tee thrown over a black bra. A thick belt takes it from simple to chic while her clutch adds a pop of color.

STYLE TIP #2 / Mix a bohemian print skirt with fringe details and a long necklace.

Vanessa Hudgens knows how to bring a fresh, modern take to boho chic. Here she pairs a bright, printed skirt with a fringed bag and a long pendant necklace. Loose, wavy hair adds a hippy element to the look while her aviator sunglasses give it some 70s appeal.

STYLE TIP #3 / Go classic with a button up shirt and a Chanel bag.

Although we only just finished perusing Alexa Chung’s style (see It Girl: Alexa Chung), we love her chic take on this trend too much to dismiss it. Although this look immediately appears to be classic and understated, small elements like stud detail on her shirt collar and messy hair add an edge.

STYLE TIP #4 / Mix a quirky print with a studded belt for added impact.

If anyone knows how to work a trend, it’s Lauren Conrad, who always has one eye on the fashion pulse while still adding her own unique touch. Here she mixes a plain black skirt with a quirky, polka dot print top. Adding a studded belt gives her look an extra edge and tones down the loose, hippy-inspired hair.

STYLE TIP #5 / Wear an extra tight skirt with layers of chunky beads.

There are many ways to do the high waisted skirt look, from a loose, bubble shape to a skintight mini. Here, Shenae Grimes opts for a subtle but sexy tight denim skirt, but tones it down by wearing chunky beads and a nondescript tank.

STYLE TIP #6 / Show off oversized pockets with a colorful cardigan and lace up boots.

Our final Style Tip comes from Peaches Geldof, a girl who knows how to work the high waisted look to her advantage. The oversized pockets add a new component to the mix, while her lace up boots and colorful cardigan add the grunge factor.

Do and Dont

Do - opt for a pencil skirt or A-line fit for work. These are the best options for a clean and elegant silhouette, and can easily be paired with a blouse, crisp French cuff shirt, and blazer for a formal look.

Don't - pair the high-waisted skirt with flats. The best options for this look are high-heeled pumps, stilettos, or platform wedges. Since most high-waisted skirts are the focal point of the outfit, you'll want to elongate the legs as much as possible.

Do - try on the tux-style high-waisted skirt for special occasions. Available in a variety of metallic and shiny fabrics, these are a unique take on traditional styles.

Don't - wear this one if you have a short torso. The high-waisted skirt (and pants) are best suited for women with long torsos since they do cinch up at the waist and take inches away from your upper body. If you're short or petite, this look will be difficult to pull off with style.

Don't - wear it if you're heavy chested. The high waist cinches right below the rib cage, so it's not a good idea to wear something super-tight around that area; definitely choose lower waists if you have a fuller upper body. If you still insist on pulling it off, be sure to wear a loose and flowy top to balance out the look.

Do - pair it with a big belt. Wide belts are a top pick this season, and a belt helps you cinch up the waist even tighter! Still, if you're looking for a figure-lengthening look, this one is not for you.

Do - try different fabrics and materials. The simple black pencil skirt isn't your only option; look for seasonal plaids, wool, and even denim styles to create a fresh look on this classic.

enjoy ur high-waisted skirts then!
